Former British women's number one Laura Robson won her first match in nearly two years, after defeating Japan’s Naomi Osaka at a challenger event in Canada.
Robson, playing at the Granby National Bank Challenger – a level below the WTA tour, defeated 17-year-old Osaka 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 6-3.
Robson, 21, has been out of action for 18 months after sustaining a wrist injury and has fallen as low as 913th in the world rankings.
She was recently defeated at Eastbourne in June before exiting Wimbledon in the first round – after receiving a wildcard entry on her comeback.
However, Robson, ranked 58th before her injury, has received a timely boost by using her protective ranking to enter into the main draw of the US Open, which begins on August 31.
The ranking allows players to enter eight tournaments based on the ranking they had before their long-term injury lay off.
