Firefighters have issued an update after a flat fire which left one person dead at the weekend.

The Brigade was called at 11.38pm on Saturday (March 17), to reports of a fire at a block of flats on Railton Road.

Most of a two-roomed flat on the second floor was damaged by the fire.

Firefighters found a person in the living room who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the death is currently being treated as unexpected.

Officers are in the process of identifying next of kin.

The incident was over for firefighters by 12.24am on Sunday (March 18).

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Brixton, Clapham and West Norwood fire stations attended the scene.

The fire is under investigation by police.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Most of a two-roomed flat on the second floor of a residential block was damaged by fire.

“Firefighters found a person in the living room who was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Brigade was called at 2338 and the incident was over for firefighters by 0024.

“Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Brixton, Clapham and West Norwood fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called by the London Fire Brigade at about 00:15hrs on Sunday, 17 March to reports of a fire in a flat on Railton Road, SE24.

“Emergency services attended.

“Sadly, one person was found deceased inside.

“The death is currently being treated as unexpected and is under investigation.

“Officers are in the process of identifying next of kin.

“Enquiries into the cause of the fire remain ongoing.

“Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 quoting reference CAD 203/17Mar.”
